Depuis le coup d’État du 26 juillet 2023, Mohamed Bazoum est incarcéré à la résidence présidentielle, en compagnie de son épouse Hadiza.
A l’issue du procès vendredi, Me Ould Salem Mohamed, l’un des avocats de Mohamed Bazoum, a annoncé avoir « accepté la décision » et précisé que le groupe des avocats de l’ancien président ferait partie « immédiatement » de cette décision.
Bazoum est accusé d’avoir eu des échanges téléphoniques avec le président français Emmanuel Macron et le secrétaire d’Etat américain Antony Blinken afin de solliciter leur soutien « par une intervention armée », lors du remaniement du 26 juillet 2023.
Il est également accusé d’avoir déclaré « avoir libéré des terroristes et les avoir reçus de la présidence ».
Les avocats de Mohamed Bazoum ont demandé vendredi à deux répétitions de l’audience, après avoir dénoncé plusieurs entraves au droit de la défense.
En décembre, Mohamed Bazoum a été libéré par la Cour de justice de la Communauté économique des États de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (Cédéao).
Le Niger n’a pas répondu à cette demande et a quitté en janvier la Cédéao, l’organisation ouest-africaine qui avait critiqué le Niger après le coup d’État. Les sanctions ont finalement été levées par l’organisation le 24 février.
