Jean-Jacques Dessalines, également connu sous le nom de Jacques Ier, né le 20 septembre 1758, sur l’Habitation Vye Kay (à Grande-Rivière-du-Nord) et mort assassiné le 17 octobre 1806 à Pont-Rouge (aujourd’hui Port-au-Prince), est un esclave affranchi, officier militaire français puis insurgé, et enfin 1er empereur d’Haïti.

On raconte que son maître le fouettait beaucoup plus que les autres jeunes esclaves.
